Alumni Spotlight: Nikki Woolfolk

This week we’re thrilled to introduce you to Committed alumni, Nikki Woolfolk. She runs her personal styling business, The Label Content,  out of Atlanta. Read on to learn what lead Nikki to enroll in the Committed Program, how her client base has changed over the years and the important lessons she’s learned from running a personal stylist business.

What led you to The Paid Stylist?

I’d already completed fashion school years prior to finding The Paid Stylist. I was working as an editorial stylist but didn’t feel connected to my clients. I had to figure out how to transition my business so that I felt my purpose was being validated. One day I was searching online and found The Paid Stylist program. What caught my attention was the program’s ability to teach key business elements needed to help me transition from an editorial to personal stylist successfully. I completed the program March 2016.

 

What did you do before you became a personal stylist?

I worked as a retailer selling handmade jewelry at various vendor markets as a way to grow revenue for the business. My business had no direction, but I always marketed myself as a stylist. The vendor markets then led me to do pop-up shops and collaborations with boutiques. A film director saw my efforts and decided to give me the platform to express my talents as a freelance editorial stylist.

 

What type of clients do you most enjoy working with?

My clients are mostly woman. The woman that come to me for help are those looking to and a job, get the new promotion, dress for their brand, or struggling because they simply have “nothing to wear.”

 

Has the type of client you work best with changed over time?

Of, course. Before my clients were models and artist who I had no connection with. The only thing I knew about them were their measurement. I dressed them for a scene, not a lifestyle.

 

Where in your city is your favorite place to shop with clients? Any hidden gems you’d like to share?

Just like most stylist, I have my favorite mall brands. Lately, I’ve scored good deals for my clients at discount stores, boutiques and online. Being in Atlanta, there are plenty of places to shop. I felt shopping limited me to the mall, so I created an in-home fitting service. Based off my client’s budget, I shop for them first, schedule an in-home fitting to see what works, and return what doesn’t. Now a client doesn’t have to wait until next year for a black suede pump or white blazer. I can help them fill in those wardrobe gaps all year round.

 

What has been the biggest lesson you’ve learned from running a personal styling business/being a personal stylist?

I’ve learned that the business of style takes more discipline than money. Staying consistent in your brand, knowing your worth, and being your authentic self is what gives you an advantage over your competition. I’ve learned that it’s not always about me; so don’t I things personal. Changing the way people look, think and feel about themselves is hard, but it’s why I love what I do.

 

What are your favorite styling tips and/ or tricks?

It’s important to learn to build feel- good wardrobe. A wardrobe where every item in your closet makes you feel confident and poise. Clothing communicates and the way you dress says a lot about a person. I believe you should invest in quality essentials that will create a lasting wardrobe.
